The Prescot War Memorial
Although not officially a part of the work undertaken by the Friends of Prescot Cemetery & Churchyard group of volunteers, we care about our local history.
“This memorial was presented to the town by Coun. Wm. John Lucas during his term of office as Chairman of the Prescot Council 1915-1917 in memory of Prescot men who sacrificed their lives fighting for their country during the great European War 1914 -1. Unveiled by the Earl of Derby, 9th September 1916″.
This information was taken from the Prescot Reporter newspaper dated Friday 15th September 1916, and the full report on the memorial unveiling can be found in the following newspaper article extract – be warned; it’s VERY small text!.
We have recorded the Name panels from the Memorial (as shown in some pictures, below) but we’re well aware that there is more lettering on the very Base of the Cenotaph which appears to have previously held gold coloured lettering but which is not currently legible.

We rely entirely on your support and the occasional funds donated to use by bodies such as the Prescot Town Council, St Mary’s Church, the local Tesco in the Community funds and the Prescot Mayor’s fund to name a few.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so either on-line (our preferred option) or by passing any donations to one of our members who are usually working in the Churchyard on most Saturday afternoons from 1pm to 3pm from March to December.
Any donations, whatever the amount be it small or large, will help our work enormously such as the funds we need to the work on the headstone pieces relocation project which we’re currently working on as at June 2026.
That alone is expected to cost some two to three thousand pounds!
