WELCOME to "The Friends" website
Hello and Welcome to the Friends of Prescot Cemetery and Churchyard group of volunteers.
We are passionate about Prescot and the history of those who lived in the area dating back hubdreds of years. If you're also keen on finding out more about Prescot, it's ancient churchyard and the more recent council cemetery section, then this website is for you!
Following the regular Posts we will be making will help to broaden your knowledge of the work we undertake - and plan to undertake, and hopefully provide you with some some help and guidance along the way.
Why not start by browsing our extensive record set showing all of the burials in the Prescot St Mary's churchyard burial ground. We have painstakingly recorded each and every gravestone transcription that we have been able to see in and around the church and the burial ground many of which date back to the late 1600s and there are also a fair number of Wargrave Commission headstones to show those who gave their all in World War 1 or World War 2.
Did you know that the Prescot War Memorial is officially the oldest War Memorial in the UK as confirmed by the Imperial War Museum?
<See the image of the War Memorial to the right and clicking on that will give you more information about this fascinating fact >
Come and enjoy the regular Blogs and Posts added by the volunteers and also keep an eye on our Facebook page for weekly updates.

Our Latest Project - abandoned headstone pieces
Over the past 2 to 3 years, we have been looking into a large number of abandoned and ‘butchered’ headstone pieces which were discovered buried under over 50 years’ worth of decaying leaves and soil towards the top end of the churchyard burial ground area.
Around 1971, a local surveying firm in St Helens (Gornall Cross & Co) undertook a survey of a lare aread of the churchyard ahead of a “redevelopment” activity which saw a great many headstones being relocated in order to expand the roadway at the front of the church.
