A very happy New Year to all our friends, supporters and volunteers.
We are all proud of the transformation the cemetery and churchyard have undergone in the last few years, and we look forward to more changes in 2016.
Our main project this year will be the creation of a Victorian Garden in St Mary’s Churchyard. The location is the grassed area on the west side, right of the path as you approach the new cemetery from the church.
Horticultural students from St Helens College have already been busily working with volunteers (pictured) to start planning the garden, which will have wheelchair access and benches. More news on this coming soon!
We also look forward to unearthing more gravestones, and Knowsley Council will begin restoring damaged graves on this historic site. The friends group continues to work closely with Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), whose aim is to restore the historic character of the town centre Conservation Area.
As ever, we welcome everyone in the community to volunteer their time and efforts in making Prescot Cemetery & Churchyard a pleasant space to honour the town’s heritage and the memory of our loved ones.
It’s lovely to read that extra help from St. Helen’s College students will be on board to help with some more projects in the cemetery…it will be a good job done when the work is completed, especially with benches for disabled to rest when visiting.
You have all done a sterling work to date and I congratulate the committee for all their effort. It gets better with each improvement.
